Keep drainage clear. Check weep holes and perforated pipe outlets at least once a year, especially after heavy rain. Blocked drainage is the most common cause of wall deterioration after the initial build.

Control vegetation near the wall. Tree roots can compromise wall joints and drainage systems over time. Keep large plantings at a reasonable distance from the wall face.

Address soil settlement early. If you notice soil settling or pulling away behind the wall, fill and regrade before it affects drainage patterns.

Don’t add load without reassessing. Adding a shed, vehicle parking area, or large structure above an existing wall changes the load it carries. Have a contractor assess whether the wall was built to handle the additional pressure before proceeding.

Routine inspection once or twice a year is typically all it takes to catch issues before they become expensive repairs.
